“Spike and Dru: Pretty Maids All in a Row” by Christopher Golden Review

Spike and Dru: Pretty Maids All in a Row

Author: Christopher Golden

Release Date: June 2001

** spoiler alert ** When I think of what makes a good book adding to an expanded universe, I hope it does a few things. First, I like it to add to what I already know about at least one character. Second, I want it to not contradict anything that’s already established. Finally, I hope that it takes advantage of the format to tell a story that wasn’t possible without the book.

This book definitely delivered on the first and third criteria by telling an interesting story about Spike, Drucilla and the watcher’s council. The story also featured globe trotting, a submarine attack, and tons of extreme violence beyond anything shown in the tv series. And for about 98% of the book, nothing contradicted what we know about the series. However, **spoiler** the death of a slayer at the end seeming to majorly contradict what we find out about Spike in television series. Still for more of the book I was really enjoying the plot of the two vampires going on a potential slayer slaughter and the aforementioned set pieces, so this book probably deserves more like a 4.5/5.
