“Under the Bright Lights” by Daniel Woodrell Review

Under the Bright Lights

Author: Daniel Woodrell

Release Date: 1986

The cover of this novel has the following review: “What people say about Cormac McCarthy goes double for Daniel Woodrell. Possibly More” – New York. I didn’t pick up on any of that. Stylistically the two were not similar besides preferring brevity, and Almost nothing in this writing stood out beyond what I’ve read in most novellas in the crime genre. The setting of Louisiana was the only thing that felt unique in the book, but it’d be overselling the uniqueness to recommend it in those grounds.

All that said, this wasn’t a bad book, just average in its genre and overhyped by the critics.
